Happy 75th Birthday, Paul

Here we are at the Alameda County Fair Grounds. The place will shut down for campers like us on the 14th of the month when the annual summer county fair will take place.

Last evening we celebrated Paul's birthday. Chris and Chet opened their home to us (again) and their hospitality is always appreciated.

But today (June 5th) is the date of his birth and tonight we will probably go out to one of his favorite restaurants for a little celebration just for the two of us. He's been my best friend for more than 51 years. We frequently remind one another of what lucky people we are, to have found one another, and I feel especially blessed in having him as my life partner.

Last evening Paul Jr and family came down from Oakland to join us and Kathy Ann and Gregg drove in from across the hills to make our "party" a nice one.

With Christina's help the little girls (Catie and Becky) set and arranged the table

and made place cards for everyone.

As is our wont, Paul choose his birthday dinner menu that consisted of tiger shrimp,

corn on the cob, asparagus, cole slaw, bread and butter and lemon meringue pie.

Kathleen found an interesting recipe for the shrimp, so after they were shelled and divined, we (Paul and Kathleen) bathed them in the "sauce" called for in the recipe. It was fun for the two of us to prepare the meal and a delight to share the meal with these members of our family.

Here's the birthday boy in his new cap (thanks to Juliana, Paul David, Miriam and Paul).

"NO DEAL BASICALLY means that if we can't find a solution that wold benefit us both, we agree to disagree agreeably--No Deal. No expectations have been created, no performance contracts established. I don't hire you or we don't take on a particular assignment together because it's obvious that our values or our goals are going in opposite directions. It is so much better to realize this up front instead of downstream when expectations have been created and both parties have been disillusioned.
When you have No Deal as an option in your mind, you feel liberated because you have no need to manipulate people, to push your own agenda, to drive for what you want. You can be open. You can really try to understand the deeper issues underlying the positions."
