Mima Mounds near Rochester, WA

We were intrigued by a neighbor this morning. There's fire coming out of that thing. All we can figure is that he was burning weeds

We later drove through the nearby town of Rochester, WA to visit the Mima Mounds.

At a unique Information Center about the mounds

Mounds upon mounds, most six-to-eight-feet tall, spread across hundreds of prairie acres, creating an otherworldly effect whose origins are still not understood

The wide mounds dot the landscape in an almost perfect, repetitive pattern akin to the reverse divots of a golf-ball. A mound-shaped observation deck allowed us to gaze above the mounds to get a better feel for the magnitude and scope of the mounds as they extend across numerous acres.

Theories abound to explain these unique mounds ranging from giant gophers, to aliens, to volcanic-inducing vibrations and harmonics that 'sifted' various soils and minerals to the surface of the land.

We enjoyed looking at the many wild flowers in the area, like this poisonous Meadow Death Camos

We found this particular variety very beautiful, unusual and interesting foxglove (thanks, Kathy Ann).

They lined one side of a yard at a local residence.

Traveling along the road we noticed this old schoolhouse - Gate City School that was in operation from 1910 to 1941.

It's used today for community events - like pancake breakfasts!

In the little town of Rochester we stopped at a most unusual IGA store. Patrons are welcomed with this sign

And are thanked when the shoppers leave....

And Mt Rainier did not disappoint

"I HAVE FOUND that the key to the ninety-nine is the one--particularly the one that is testing the patience and the good humor of the many. It is the love and the discipline of the one student, the one child, that communicates love for the others. It's how you treat the one that reveals how you regard the ninety-nine, because everyone is ultimately a one." (9/6)
