The day came to say goodbye to pleasant Silver Lake Resort 6 miles North of Channing, MI on MI-95 and our neighbors and head East. Dennis was in camp when we arrived and he's been a perfect neighbor. His wife, Terrie wasn't in camp as often as Dennis, so we were reluctant to say "goodbye" to this charming lady before we really got to know her. Both Dennis and Terrie are the kind of neighbors one hopes for at a camp, so we felt lucky to meet them both. We hope, if we come here next year, to renew our friendship! Dennis is a sort of wood artist. He makes the most beautiful hand made articles. He presented us with one of his pencils ....

what a piece of patience, art and inventiveness! We'll cherish this, you can be sure!

Leaving Channing and our campground, we drove south to Iron Mountain then turned east across the southern part of the U P. The first town after Iron Mountain is a little place called Norway, MI. We especially enjoy passing through this little town because when one enters the town from any of the three main inroads, one is greeted by one of the three replica Viking ships that greet those incoming.

They also provide people with a first peek into how seriously the town takes its view on history.

Rich in mining, logging, and Scandinavian lore, the town has reached out to the public with annual events such as the Leif Erickson Fall Festival, and the Scandinavian Midsummer Fest.

We drove MI-95 South to US-2 East. We often followed the Lake Michigan shore. Next time we'll boondock along it. We found the following at a Rest Stop

Rustic Rest Stop

A walkway at the Rest Stop led to the shore of Lake Michigan. Paul took this pose hoping someone from Hollywood would notice ;o)

Going South on the ($12.50 motorhome toll) Mackinaw bridge (South of St Ignace, MI)

A ferry or tour boat with "rooster tail" as seen from the bridge

We spent the night at the Mackinaw City/Mackinaw Island KOA, 566 Trailsend Road, Mackinaw City, MI 49701 800-562-1738. We don't use the KAO campgrounds very often (a bit pricy for us) but this was a nice and friendly place.

Love and Peace, Paul and Kathleen

"I HAVE FOUND that the key to the ninety-nine is the one--particularly the one that is testing the patience and the good humor of the many. It is the love and the discipline of the one student, the one child, that communicates love for the others. It's how you treat the one that reveals how you regard the ninety-nine, because everyone is ultimately a one." (9/6)
